Jeremy Barton joined chambers in 2006 and has built up a successful practice both defending and prosecuting serious criminal matters. He has particular experience in defending cases involving police discipline and regulatory matters, serious assaults, gang related crime, multi-handed public order cases, and defending clients with mental health issues.
Most recently, Jeremy successfully defended Sergeant Mark Andrews on appeal before the Police Appeals Tribunal, Swindon where he was reinstated following the hearing. This matter is currently still ongoing and was widely reported in the media.
Sergeant Andrews was originally dismissed from the police force in 2010 following a misconduct hearing in December the same year. He faced allegations of gross misconduct arising out of the way in which he was alleged to have dealt with a suspect, Pamela Somerville whilst in his custody.
Sergeant Andrews was dismissed from the police force, despite being cleared of any criminal wrongdoing on Appeal before Mr Justice Bean at Oxford Crown Court where he originally faced charges of causing actual bodily harm to Ms Somerville. Jeremy appeared for the defendant in all matters.
This high profile case involved assessing a great deal of expert medical evidence and careful cross examination of a particularly emotional and difficult complainant.
